Wind uplift is the force created when wind blows across a roof and generates lower air pressure above the surface than below it, effectively pulling shingles and roofing components upward rather than simply pushing them sideways. It concentrates hardest at roof edges, corners, and ridges, which is why those areas need extra fastening, starter strip, and properly sealed shingles to resist it. Wind uplift damage often shows as shingles that are lifted, creased, or missing along an edge, even when the rest of the roof looks undisturbed.
Wind does more to a roof than push against it from the side. As air moves across a sloped surface, it creates a pocket of lower pressure just above the roof compared to the space below the shingles, and that pressure difference physically pulls upward on anything not firmly sealed down.
That pulling force is wind uplift, and it behaves differently from a simple sideways gust. A shingle can be perfectly fine against wind blowing flat across it and still be vulnerable to the lifting force uplift creates at a weak seal or a loose edge.
Uplift is not distributed evenly across a roof. It concentrates hardest at edges, corners, and ridge lines, the places where airflow separates most sharply from the roof surface, which is exactly why those zones get extra attention in a proper installation.
Starter strip along the eaves and rakes, tight nailing patterns, and a full seal on every course are all built specifically to resist uplift at those vulnerable edges, since a roof is only as wind-resistant as its weakest sealed seam.
When uplift wins, the damage looks distinct from hail. Instead of scattered bruised spots, uplift damage shows as lifted, creased, or torn-loose shingles concentrated along an edge, a ridge, or a corner, sometimes with shingles missing outright.
For a homeowner, wind-uplift damage after a storm warrants a documented inspection focused specifically on the roof's edges and ridge.
