A turbine vent is a round, wind-driven attic exhaust vent with fins that spin when the wind blows, using that spin to pull hot air up and out of the attic faster than a passive vent alone. It sits on the roof like a static vent but adds mechanical assistance on windy days, and works more like a plain vent when the air is still. Turbine vents are an older, still-common ventilation option, though many newer roofs favor a continuous ridge vent, which has no moving parts to maintain.
A turbine vent looks like a metal globe made of curved fins sitting on top of a roof, and those fins are the whole idea behind it. Wind blowing across the fins spins the turbine, and that spinning motion pulls attic air up and out through the vent faster than a stationary opening would on its own.
On a breezy day, that mechanical assist genuinely moves more air than a passive vent of the same size, which is why turbine vents were popular for decades as an inexpensive way to boost attic exhaust.
The tradeoff is that a turbine vent depends on wind to do its extra work. On a still, hot day, the exact conditions when an attic needs ventilation most, the turbine barely spins and performs closer to a plain static vent.
Because it has moving parts, a turbine vent can also wear out. The bearing that lets it spin freely can seize up over years of exposure, at which point it stops turning and just sits there as a static opening.
A turbine vent still needs the same paired soffit intake as any other exhaust vent to work correctly, since it can only pull air up if fresh air is coming in low on the roof to replace it.
A turbine vent already installed should get an occasional spin check, to confirm the bearing has not rusted in place. Many newer roofs skip turbines in favor of a continuous ridge vent, which moves air passively and has nothing that can seize or wear out.
