TPO, short for thermoplastic polyolefin, is a single-ply membrane roofing material used on flat and low-slope roofs, installed in large sheets that are heat-welded together at the seams to form one continuous waterproof surface. It is typically white or light-colored, which reflects sunlight and helps reduce heat buildup compared with darker roofing materials. TPO is one of the most widely used low-slope roofing systems today because it balances a relatively low material cost with strong seam strength and solid puncture resistance.

What makes TPO distinct from an older single-ply material like EPDM rubber is how its seams are joined. TPO is commonly manufactured in a white or light gray finish, and that color choice is functional rather than just aesthetic. A reflective, light-colored surface absorbs less solar heat than a dark membrane, which can meaningfully reduce the heat load transferred into the building below during hot months.
The material also holds up well to foot traffic and minor punctures compared with some alternatives, a real consideration on any low-slope roof that carries HVAC equipment, vents, or periodic maintenance visits across its surface.
Not every TPO product is the same, and thickness and the underlying formulation vary meaningfully by manufacturer, which is why the membrane's thickness, commonly measured in mils, is a specific, comparable number worth checking rather than assuming all TPO quotes describe an identical material.
Installation quality matters as much as the membrane itself on a TPO roof, since a heat-welded seam is only as reliable as the technician who ran the welder, and a poorly fused seam is one of the more common points of failure on an otherwise sound membrane roof.
