Shingle exposure is the portion of each shingle course left visible to the weather after the next course above it overlaps it, typically around 5 to 5 5/8 inches on a standard architectural shingle. It is set by the manufacturer's specifications and directly controls how many layers of shingle protect the roof at any given point, since a smaller exposure means more overlap and more layers of material. Installing shingles at the wrong exposure, whether too much or too little, is an installation error that shortens the roof's expected life even when the shingle product itself is high quality.
Shingles are installed in overlapping horizontal courses, and exposure is the measurement of how much of each course stays uncovered once the course above it is nailed into place, running from the bottom edge of the exposed portion up to where the next course begins covering it.
Every shingle product has a manufacturer-specified exposure, commonly around 5 to 5 5/8 inches for a standard architectural shingle, printed directly on the product's installation instructions and packaging.
That number is not arbitrary. It is calculated against the shingle's up-slope height, the dimension running from the bottom edge to the top edge of each shingle, not its length along the course, so the roof ends up with a consistent number of layers, usually two full layers of material, protecting every square inch of the surface.
Installing at a wider exposure than specified means each course covers less of the one below it, thinning out the protective layering across the roof and leaving the shingles more exposed to wind and water than the manufacturer's testing accounted for. A tighter than specified exposure wastes material without adding real protection.
A wider exposure is sometimes used, deliberately or by a rushed crew, to stretch a bundle of shingles across more roof area and use fewer bundles on the job, which cuts material cost at the direct expense of the roof's durability.
For a homeowner, correct shingle exposure is not something you can easily verify from the ground once a roof is finished.
That makes it a detail best left to a contractor with a documented, careful process, not the lowest bid that quietly skips the manufacturer's spec.
