Shingle blistering is small, raised bubbles that form on the surface of an asphalt shingle, usually caused by trapped moisture or gas expanding under the shingle's surface in the heat. When a blister eventually pops or wears through, it takes the protective granules with it and exposes bare asphalt underneath, creating a weak spot that ages faster than the rest of the shingle. Blistering is more a sign of manufacturing or ventilation issues than storm damage, and it tends to show up scattered across a roof rather than in one impact zone.
A blistered shingle has small, dome-shaped bumps on its surface, often no bigger than a coin, where a pocket of trapped moisture or gas has pushed up between the shingle's layers under the heat of the sun.
That trapped pocket forms during manufacturing, when a small amount of moisture gets sealed into the shingle, or later, when heat and poor attic ventilation cook the shingle from below and cause it to off-gas and swell.
As long as the blister stays intact, it is mostly a cosmetic issue, easy to overlook from the ground. The problem starts once the blister pops or simply wears through from foot traffic, sun, or age.
A popped blister leaves behind a small crater where the granules were pulled away with the blistered surface, exposing raw asphalt to direct sun exactly like a granule-loss spot from hail or aging, except concentrated in a small, specific point. That exposed spot ages faster than the surrounding shingle from that point forward.
Because blistering usually comes from trapped moisture or heat rather than an impact, it tends to show up scattered somewhat randomly across a roof, or concentrated on the slope that gets the most sun, rather than clustered in one obvious storm-hit area.
A handful of small blisters on an otherwise sound roof is usually not urgent, but widespread blistering needs a documented look, since it can point to a ventilation problem baking the roof from underneath rather than a shingle-batch issue traced back to the material itself.
