A roof warranty is a manufacturer's or contractor's written promise to stand behind the materials or the installation of a roof for a set period of time. There are two distinct kinds: a materials warranty from the shingle manufacturer, which commonly runs 25 to 50 years but usually covers only defective product, and a workmanship warranty from the installing contractor, which covers installation errors and is often much shorter. Reading which kind of warranty covers a specific problem is essential, since the two are not interchangeable.

A workmanship warranty is a completely separate promise, made by the contractor who installed the roof, covering problems caused by how the roof was put on rather than a defect in the shingle itself, such as a leak from improperly sealed flashing.
Workmanship warranties are usually much shorter than materials warranties, often measured in a small number of years rather than decades, and they exist entirely at the discretion of the installing contractor rather than the manufacturer.
The two warranties can also interact. Some manufacturers offer an enhanced warranty that extends coverage when the roof is installed by a certified contractor, effectively combining materials and workmanship protection under one longer term, but the requirements for that enhanced coverage are specific and have to be met exactly.
The honest first question with any roof problem is which warranty, if either, actually applies. A materials defect and an installation error are two different claims with two different parties responsible, and knowing the difference is the starting point for getting a problem addressed.
