Roof pitch is the measure of how steep a roof is. It is written as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run, such as 6:12, meaning the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches it runs horizontally. A higher first number means a steeper roof. Pitch affects how a roof sheds water, what materials can be used, and how much a replacement costs, because steeper roofs are slower and more dangerous to work on.

Pitch is roofing's way of describing steepness with a simple ratio. The second number is almost always 12, representing a foot of horizontal distance, and the first number tells you how many inches the roof climbs over that foot.

A 4:12 is a gentle, walkable slope, an 8:12 is noticeably steep, and anything past about 9:12 is steep enough that crews need ropes and extra safety gear to work on it at all.

Pitch shapes the roof in practical ways. A steeper roof sheds water and debris faster and can carry materials, like certain shingles or metal, that a very low slope cannot.

It also has more surface area than a low-slope roof over the same footprint, which means more squares of material to buy and install. And because working on a steep roof is slower and riskier, the labor portion of the estimate climbs right along with the pitch.

For a homeowner, pitch is one of the quiet reasons two homes with the same floor plan can get different roof quotes. A steeper roof simply costs more to replace, both in material and in the careful, slower labor it demands.

Knowing your roof's pitch helps you understand your estimate and why a roofer prices a steep roof differently from a low one.
