Roof moss is a low-growing plant that colonizes damp, shaded roof surfaces, most often on the north-facing slope or under heavy tree cover, where shingles stay wet longer between rain events. Beyond its appearance, moss holds moisture directly against the shingle surface and can work under shingle edges, which accelerates granule loss and can lift shingles enough to let water underneath. Moss is generally removed with a gentle, non-pressure method rather than power-washed, since aggressive cleaning strips granules and shortens the shingles' own life.
Moss needs sustained moisture and shade to establish itself, which is exactly why it shows up in predictable places on a roof: the north-facing slope that gets the least direct sun, areas shaded by overhanging trees, and any section of roof that simply stays damp longer than the rest after a rain.
Once established, moss does more than sit on the surface. Its structure holds water directly against the shingle underneath it, keeping that patch of roof wet for far longer stretches than an unaffected area, and its growth can work into the small gap under a shingle's edge, gradually lifting it away from the surface below.
That lifting matters more than it might seem from the ground. A shingle edge raised even slightly by moss growth is no longer lying flat and sealed against its neighbors, which creates a small opening for wind-driven rain to work underneath, and it also speeds up granule loss on the affected shingles as the moss physically disturbs the surface.
How moss gets removed matters as much as removing it. A pressure washer strips moss quickly, but the same force also strips protective granules and can drive water under shingles that were otherwise intact, trading one problem for another and shortening the roof's life in the process.
The safer approach is a gentle wash, often with a mild solution designed for roofing, applied with low pressure and allowed to work rather than blasted off, followed by a careful rinse and a soft-bristle removal of the loosened growth.
Addressing what fed the moss in the first place, usually shade and slow drying from overhanging branches, matters as much as any single cleaning, since a shaded, damp roof will simply grow moss back without that underlying condition changing.
