Ridge cap shingles are specially shaped shingles bent and installed along the peak, or ridge, of a roof to cover the joint where two slopes meet. They seal the exposed seam at the very top of the roof and, on roofs with a ridge vent, cover the vent opening while still allowing air to pass through. Ridge caps take more direct sun and wind stress than field shingles, so they are often the first shingles to show wear on an aging roof.

The ridge is the highest, most exposed line on a roof, catching the most direct sun of any surface and taking the brunt of the wind that crosses the roofline before it reaches anywhere else. It is also where two roof slopes meet, leaving a seam that needs something built specifically to seal it.

Ridge cap shingles are cut and bent along a factory-scored line so each cap folds cleanly over that peak instead of lying flat like a field shingle. They are installed one at a time along the ridge, starting from the end away from the prevailing wind and working toward it, so each cap's exposed lap edge faces away from the wind. Gusts press the laps down instead of prying them up.

On a roof with a ridge vent, the ridge cap does double duty. It is installed directly over the vent material, hiding it from view while its shape still lets air escape from the attic underneath.

Because the ridge sits at the highest point of the roof, ridge cap shingles take the most direct sun exposure and the highest wind loads of any shingle on the house, with almost nothing above them to break the weather.

That exposure means ridge caps often show granule loss, curling, or cracking before the rest of the roof does, even when the field shingles still look sound.

For a homeowner, a worn or lifting ridge cap sits at the roof's most vulnerable seam, but on an otherwise healthy roof it is often a straightforward repair rather than a sign the whole roof needs replacing.

The ridge line is also one of the few roof details visible from the ground with a careful look, since it usually sits unobstructed against the sky.
